Our boiler is very old and has completely broken, so we need to get a new one asap. If we get a 24kw boiler (we have a small terraced house) can we keep our 15mm pipes? I am not well and cannot face the disruption of having all the pipes upgraded to 22mm or more. Can someone please tell me if it is okay to keep our 15mm pipes with a 24kw boiler? Thank you.

Hi Geraldine Gilmour, I understand your not well and want to keep disruption to a min, but unfortunately from my understand of what your describing the direct answer to your question is NO. a 24KW boiler is about 81000BTU and a 15mm pipe is capable of carrying about 13000BTU, with that said your system will work if run on 15mm pipes its a question of how effective or efficiently it will be. What's more important from a safety point of view is the gas pipe work, normally this does need upgrading to comply with current regulations and manufacturer installation requirements. The best advise I can offer you from here is to get a local trader out to do an onsite check and provide you with a quote (at least 3 quotes, make sure they are free and without obligation) then you can compare the difference as well as getting a better understanding of what's actually involved. Please feel free to come back and ask for more advice on the quotes if your not sure. I hope that was of some help, wishing you all the best. Ibrahim.

Hello Can you tell me which pipes you have to upgrade ? Cold feed and hot water supplies are normally 15mm to and from a combi The central heating loop would normally start in 22mm and have 15mm branches running to the radiators When you mention that your pipework has to be upgraded to 22mm or more , perhaps they are refering to the gas pipe which will possibly a have to start in 28mm . this would depend on the route of the gas pipe and also the number of existing gas appliances If you could let us have some more information we might be able to give you some more info Thanks Martin
