Just a quick one...I am putting up some shelves and wanted to know if it's safe to drill into a wall where there are plug sockets directly below. If the fixings are less that the width of a brick I guess this is fine?

I wouldn't risk it, you can buy a cable finder, that will detect where the cables are in the wall

Don't risk drilling above a socket.

You can remove the socket face and see which way the cables travel or you could buy a cable finder.cables are not buried to deep in the wall, if you don't check it could cause a lot of damage not just to your health.hope this helps.

No it is most definately not fine. The space vertically up and down the width of sockets and switches is known as the safe zone, as is the space horizontally either side of the sockets and switches. The safe zones are where the electrician should run the cables, safe zones also run within 150mm of all corners of the walls, and within 150mm of the ceiling. The cable will most likely not be very deep in the wall so any drilling or nailing within the safe zones is quite likely to hit a cable. Please just move the position of the shelves to avoid drilling within the zones.
