Q:

Plaster all the walls or touch up? Ceilings also?

Just moved in to an old terrace house and stripped the wallpaper back. The walls seem really uneven and there seems to be a divide half way up the wall. Do I need to get all the walls plastered or can you just touch up areas? Also - does a plasterer do ceilings also? I have a horrible wavey effect I want to go over to have it smooth or is this a painter and decorator?

Plasyering is a very subjective trade some people will paint anything and others want absolute perfection. If you want absolute perfection it needs to come off and go back to the brick this way you will get 100% level and smooth walls. If you dont mind certain margins being out and maybe uneven but perfectly smooth finish its a full reskim you need. If you just want ot patching and dont mind the walls as they are then have it patched. Yes plasterers can skim most artex ceilings but some are not advisable no one could make this decision wothout seeing the job firsthand. Hope this helps.

The walls could just be patched up in the worst areas, but you will get a better finish skimming the whole wall. One thing to check in an old property, is whether the old plaster has blown, which means it has come away from the brickwork behind. If there is a hollow sound when it is tapped with your knuckles, then it has most likely blown and really needs knocking off back to brickwork. The divide you mention could be from the removal of a dado rail previously, or possibly the bottom half of the walls have been internally rendered and re-plastered to prevent damp. It is possible to skim over the artex ceiling, but if the artex does not have a good bond to the ceiling, it has been known, for the extra weight to pull it off the ceiling. In my opinion it is always better to overboard it, or remove the ceiling and re-board, the latter being the more expensive and messier option, especially if it is an old lath and plaster ceiling.

Walls can be skimmed over and it's possible it may be just certain areas, however it may be worth the small amount that it would cost to just bite the bullet and get the whole lot skimmed. The artex ceiling can be skimmed over no problem but if the artex is really deep, it may need over boarding first.

Hi there,
walls can be patch repaired or skimmed over after walls/ceilings treated with bonding agent depending on the background it can be pva, blue grit, thistle bond it and a likes. The unevennes can be rectified with skimming over to a certain extent, depending on the unevenness it might have to take it back to brick and start from there. Ceilings can be over skimmed, however it's always advised that (as you adding weight to the ceiling) either overboard existing one or rip old ceiling down then plasterboard and skim.
That's in a nutshell
best of luck with the project
