A quick question: How often should I be having my combi boiler services (4 years old) and how much can I expect to pay from a reputable trade? What qualifications are necessary to complete the job? Thanks

It should be inspected annually to ascertain whether it needs a service. Also if it has a long term guarantee the log book should be filled in by the inspecting engineer to ensure your guarantee continues.
For the inspection about £50 rising to £70 if it needs a service. The engineer should be Gas Safe registered to work on boilers, check the rear of their ID card for Cent1

HI, boiler requires checking annually, you would look to be paying between £45-£65.....make sure they are "gas safe registered" and have "boilers"
written on the back of their ID cards!...............hope this helps

Also echo the above, but should stress that as well as having your boiler serviced it is also advisable to have a gas safety check carried out too of all the appliances and the pipe work in your home as well as having a Co detector fitted. This might sound like a lot of work and more worryingly even more cash but in reality, not as much as you might think. We are currently offering a Free gas safety check with every boiler service to mark this years Gas Safety Week. To give you some indication of prices we charge £96 inc of VAT for a service, and Co detectors can be purchased for as little as £15. In terms of time scale a typical service should take no less than 45min to complete if not an hour or so. ( You can always refer to your boiler installation manual to see what should be carried out during annual routine servicing) The important thing to note here is regulations are always changing an annual boiler service and safety checks insure your up to date and remain safe, the biggest misconception is that if everything is working it must be fine. I hope that helps and feel free to ask more. All the best Ibrahim.

Good response from tom the only thing I'd add is you can check their gas safe card and look on the back to see which appliances they are qualified In and the expiry date.

Hi Nigel, a very good question you've asked there! It is important for all boilers, regardless of the fuel they consume to be serviced annually. It is also important that the service engineer be Gas Safe registered if it's a gas boiler to be serviced. This is currently a legal requirement in the U.K. It is recommended that should it be an oil boiler, then the service engineer is OFTEC registered. Although this is not a legal requirement, it is highly recommended. The cost of a service varies greatly from different areas of the country & also the firm/service engineer you are calling. The best course of action to ask neighbours & friends who they have used & who they trust to recommend. If you want to be doubly sure you are getting a reasonable price for the service, get at least 3 quotes to make a comparison. Remember to check to see if they are Gas Safe registered if they are to be working on a gas boiler. This can be done online or over the phone. Best wishes & thanks for your question.
